Meetups like the One Nation Truck Meetup have become the perfect place to take a group of people for a drink, laugh, talk politics and share stories.
The national meetup has become such a popular activity, that in 2017 it attracted over 200,000 participants, with one in five attendees saying they had gone to a truck meet.
The truck meet up, organised by the One National Truck Club, attracts a wide range of people.
“It’s a great way for you to get together with other people in your community, you know, to go and have a laugh,” one attendee told News.au.
“A truck meet is a great social event that people can enjoy and have some fun with, I think.”
“If it’s a group or a single person, then they can have a drink and chat about the upcoming week and go to the pub,” said another attendee.
“You can meet people from all walks of life, just from different backgrounds,” said a third attendee who said he had travelled to Canberra from Melbourne to attend the event.
“People from different parts of the country come together to share stories and have fun,” he said.
“There’s loads of fun to be had.”
In recent years, the One Nationals Truck Club has organised truck meet ups in other Australian cities including Canberra, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane.
The meeting, which is held at a truck stop, is open to all ages.
“We don’t have an age limit but it’s about being able to come and enjoy a pint, talk and laugh,” said one attende.
“The more people that are in a group, the better,” said the other attendee, who had attended a similar meetup in Brisbane in 2018.
“I just think it’s an interesting way to socialise with people and have drinks and socialize,” said attendee Nick.
“If you’re having a really good time, you’ll probably have a few laughs and maybe even a few conversations, so you’re really enjoying the moment,” he added.
“For some reason, we just like the idea of having a little bit of fun.”
The One Nation truck meet-up in Canberra has been growing since 2018, with more than 200 people taking part in the event each week.
“That was a really exciting time for us,” said Nick, who has attended the event in 2017.
“After that, it just sort of stopped and we didn’t really have any more truck meet events happening, so we’ve kind of stopped,” he continued.
“So now, it’s just getting bigger and bigger and the event is always growing.”
The events are also an opportunity to network, socialise and have laughs, with many truckers finding the opportunity to connect and chat online with other truckers and others from their community.
“Some of the most successful meetups are really focused on the people that you know and the ones you see every day,” said co-organiser Paul.
“With a truck, it becomes a real social event where you can connect with like-minded people,” he explained.
“And we’re trying to help people all over the country, from rural to urban, so if we can get people together and have that fun, it can really be a great experience.”
In 2018, the event attracted nearly 200 participants, and last year saw over 50 truckers attend the meeting.
“One Nation is really popular in Australia, so when we’re going to get people from other parts of Australia that’s also growing, that’s really good,” said Paul.
The One National Meetup has attracted a wide variety of people in the past.
“My favourite one to go to is in Adelaide because they’re always just amazing, they always have fun, and it’s always an event you want to come to,” said Bob.
“In a truck and a meet up it’s not just a group you can meet with your mates but it becomes something that you can actually socialise in,” said Joe.
“Sometimes I’ll go to a meet-and-greet event and I’ll talk to my friends, I’ll take photos, I can do stuff,” he concluded.
